Program Note

              The text of Magnificat comes from the famous song in Luke 1:46-55. Mary, the mother of Jesus, has just been told by an angel that she will bear God’s son, and she celebrates God’s favor on her. Though this text has been set many times, I chose to set it using the English Standard Version translation and with a women’s choir, since it is a woman who originally spoke the text.
