Program Note

Gray Dusk was composed during my first spring and early summer as a Michigan resident. Compared to my previous home in Colorado, the sun sets later, creating the disorienting feeling late in the evening that it is actually one or two hours earlier. In addition, Michigan’s larger number of cloudy days mean that many evenings consist of gradually darkening shades of gray instead of a colorful sunset. Gray Dusk was written with these feelings in mind: the unsettling nature of the sky not quite matching the clock and nightfall sneaking in behind cloud cover working together to create a different experience of dusk.
