Program Note

Aquilegia Chorale is written for a beginning band’s first concert (after approximately 3-4 months of playing). The title is drawn from the flower aquilegia caerulea, also called the blue columbine, the state flower of Colorado. Besides the blue columbine, the flower comes in many colors and is distinguished by its bell shape and spurs, which provide nectar for birds. Additionally, the columbine has at least two layers of petals, each with a distinct shape, and often with a distinct color.

The musical concepts used in this piece are almost exclusively drawn from the first thirteen student pages in Essential Elements. Parts are optional for less common instruments.
